In 1895, Uniontown was incorporated as a city of the fourth class with a mayor council form of government. Today, Uniontown is a city of the third class and continues to have a mayor-council form of government. The First school in Marion Township began in 1860 and was taught by William Kirby.
A two-story, large, frame schoolhouse with four large rooms and a full-length porch was built in 1871 at the cost of $2000 and was graded in 1872.
After much litigation, the school Board of Rural High School District No. 4 approved a bond issue of $300,000 to build a new high school. On August 20, 1962, the school District purchased 18.5 acres of land from Lloyd Stroud for $3,712. This land was to be the site of West Bourbon County. Today, Uniontown has a population of 288, according to the 2000 federal census.Information obtained from the book; Bourbon County, Kansas by Fred Campbell Jr. and Don Miller
