Cookie Island Project
January 26, 2010
Third graders in Mrs. Hoener’s room have been studying about different communities and their geography. As a part of this unit students studied landform maps. As a culmination activity, students designed their own island map showing such landforms as mountains, hills, plateaus, rivers, lakes and plains. After they designed their map, they made the island to match using various food items. The island was a cookie, brown frosting for soil, blue frosting for water, green coconut for grass, Hershey Kisses for mountains, chocolate chips for hills, and Kit Kat bars for plateaus. Once the islands were finished the students got to eat them for a special Fun Friday treat. The students loved the activity and learned to make the connection between maps and what they actually represent.
