Uniontown FFA Excels at Greenhand Conference

Uniontown High School first-year FFA members, also called Greenhands, got their first taste of competition last Wednesday at the Southeast District Greenhand Conference. Along with workshops over leadership and industry related career opportunities, there were three FFA Career Development Events (aka contests) held that day; FFA Information, Creed Speaking and Spelldown Information. Uniontown FFA was well represented as they finished 2nd out of 25 schools in FFA Information, had the 2nd and 4th place individuals in Creed Speaking and had the high individual in Spelldown Information.

The FFA Information competition tests students over their knowledge of FFA history, traditions, ceremonies, operations, programs, awards and policies. All 600 plus competitors from the 25 schools throughout the Southeast District competed in the event.  Uniontown scored well enough to be named the 2nd place overall team. Libby Schaaf and Clay Brillhart led the way with 2nd and 3rd place individual finishes. Aiden and Drew Holt finished 8th and 9th while Bri Stokes and Drew Perry tied for 11th. Labette County won the Information contest with a score that was two points better than Uniontown’s. Other Uniontown FFA members competing in the FFA Information competition were Logan Gieger, Rhian Gorman, Braden Griffiths, Jake Harvey, McKenna Lord, Paige Mason, Karleigh Schoenberger and Clay Sutterby.

FFA Creed Speaking has been a long standing tradition of the FFA and each school in the district is allotted two spots in the competition. In total, there were 43 speakers from 23 schools competing in Creed Speaking. Clay Brillhart earned a state qualification with his 2nd place finish, while Aiden Holt brought home a very respectable 4th place finish. A young lady from Riverton won the contest and will join Brillhart at the state contest in late May on the campus of Kansas State University.

The third and final event at Greenhand conference is the FFA Spelldown. This event is similar to a spelling bee, however instead of spelling words correctly, contestants must answer FFA trivia from memory in front of the large crowd of Greenhands. Each school is represented by their highest scoring individual in the FFA Information contest. Libby Schaaf was Uniontown’s representative and found her way to the top as she was the last contestant standing in the Spelldown competition taking first place.

Uniontown didn’t have to travel far to attend the conference as it was held in Uniontown. Each year Greenhand Conference is held at the school where the President of the district attends. This year’s district president is Gavin Fry of Uniontown. Danielle Nading, also of Uniontown, is the district Secretary serving the Southeast District with Fry along with four other district officers.
