The Uniontown FFA Meats Evaluation team capped off an undefeated spring as they were named State Champions at the Kansas FFA State Meats Evaluation Contest on Tuesday in Manhattan, KS. Haydon Schaaf and Nick Hathaway led the way as they finished 1st and 2nd respectively as individuals. Gavin Fry and Clay Brillhart contributed with their 7th and 8th place individual finishes. There were 147 contestants and 40 teams in the contest from all sizes of schools from across the state of Kansas. With the win, Uniontown will represent Kansas at the National FFA Meats Evaluation Contest held in Indianapolis, Indiana in late October. The team won the contest over 2nd place Scott City by 53 points. Anderson County, Spring Hill and Eureka rounded out the top 5. At the contest, contestants had to identify 30 retail pork, beef and lamb cuts, place six classes, quality and yield grade six beef carcasses, answer ten questions about two different classes, and quality grade 20 ribeye’s.

The team had previously won 1st at the Northeast District Invitational, Southeast District Contest and the NEO College contest. The team also competed at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado in January winning 4th at the national contest. They had earned that opportunity with their 2nd place finish at last year’s state contest. The team is coached by Uniontown FFA Advisor Scott Sutton.
