We kicked off chapter officer interviews today like we never have before!! I conducted 4 interview sessions with 4 of our 10 candidates this afternoon via Zoom! Each candidate was asked a series of questions and recorded. Tomorrow the other 6 candidates will be asked the same questions and of course will be recorded. Once all 10 have been interviewed, they will also record a short speech, upload to Youtube and share the link with me. At that point their interviews, speeches and applications will be shared with the interview judging panel for evaluation. FFA members are making the best of this situation and making things happen!

Even though the school year isn’t finishing up like we all hoped, there are some cool things that will happen over the next several weeks. This is an example of that! I’m also excited to report that Mr. Reith is all in on students doing projects that relate to their elective courses and receiving class grades for it. I will have more information on what that looks like as we begin meeting over Zoom!

The FFA Trip is still happening! Despite the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo cancelling due to the Coronavirus scare, we are still leaving tomorrow morning at 4:00 AM. We will continue with our tours tomorrow and our trip to Six Flags on Friday. Saturday we will attend the Oklahoma Youth Expo Livestock Show in Oklahoma City instead of going on to Houston. We will still return home on Sunday afternoon, maybe a little earlier than originally planned.

For a First Friday activity, sixth grade wrote notes to encourage the high school basketball players, wrestlers, cheerleaders, managers, and band members. Sixth grade put their notes on hands to look like "high fives" and taped them to lockers. It was fun spreading school spirit.

Due to the Pleasanton Mid-Season Basketball Tournament being moved to Saturday we will not be going to the Math Competition on Saturday, January 25. Fourteen basketball players who are playing in the tournament were also scheduled to go to the Math Competition.

Uniontown FFA Places 4th at National Contest The Uniontown FFA Meat Evaluation team recently brought home 4th place honors at the National Western Roundup Meat Evaluation contest held in Fort Collins, Colorado. Uniontown earned the opportunity to represent the state of Kansas in the contest with their state runner-up finish this past May. The contest consisted of placing classes, beef grading, retail identification, questions, meat formulation problems and a written exam. After completing all of the above on Saturday, January 11th on the campus of Colorado State University, the team ranked 3rd in Beef Grading, 4th in Placings, 6th in Retail Identification and 4th overall. Clay Brillhart led the team individually with a 7th place finish overall. He also ranked 8th in the placing category and 8th in the retail identification division. Maddie Ard finished 17th overall, Braden Griffiths was 5th in Beef Grading and ranked 21st overall, and Logan Geiger ranked 24th in Retail Identification. The team is coached by Uniontown FFA Advisor Scott Sutton.

Presenters from Greenbush are working with students in Grades 6-8 this morning to review results from the Color Code personality test. USD 235 staff took the test earlier in the year and reviewed their results. Relationships and Responsive Culture are two of the goals USD 235 is working on during its accreditation process.
Both Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Gorman's third grade classes ventured to UHS to join Mr. Woods' seventh hour high school art class which consisted of students ranging from Art 1 to Art 5 and also students who are enrolled in Graphic Design. The 3rd graders were paired with a high school buddy to hand create a ceramic bell for Christmas. The bells were made using the pinching method out of clay, a slab handle was added to the top, and together they decorated it. A small ball of clay was rolled and will be connected to the bell with a string after the piece is bisque fired. After firing, the third grade students will paint their bell. The bell will be functional once finished.

Eagle Nation lost one of its own this afternoon. Former Head Coach and 2018-19 Asst. HS Girls Basketball Coach Kenny Holt passed away. He was an amazing advocate for kids and his display of courage in the face of life’s difficulties over the past 8 years was an inspiration to many. Rest In Peace Kenny.
TeamMates Mentoring Program is coming to USD 235! It is an education-based mentoring program where you come to school once a week for 30 minutes to mentor a student. It can be during your lunchtime! Don George, Fisheries Biologist, with Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, & Tourism came to Uniontown today to stock the pond. Mr. George spoke with students about the pond and its ecosystem. He shared with students the benefits of stocking the pond and all of the life systems impacted by the pond. We appreciate Mr. George taking time to share this information with our students.
We would like to congratulate Mrs. Carrie Miller for being selected as the USD 235 Employee of the Month for September 2019. Mrs. Miller was nominated by a WBE colleague. The colleague commented, “Mrs. Miller goes above and beyond to make learning fun and interesting for her 3rd grade students. She teaches with hands-on lessons that keep the students active. Mrs. Miller motivates her students and it is evident how much she cares.” We are proud to award Mrs. Carrie Miller as the Employee of the Month for September 2019. Freshman Uniontown FFA members known as Greenhands travelled to Riverton today to the SE District Greenhand Conference. The team placed 4th out of 26 SE District schools. Emily Greenway was 5th Individually out of 495 students. Rylan Lee and Destiny Muniz ranked in the top 10% with their 31st and 45th Place finish. The Uniontown FFA Entomology teams competed today at the SE District Entomology contest. The JR/SR team finished 3rd in the district. Clay Brillhart was 9th overall. Clay Sutterby, Jake Harvey, Drew Perry and Hunter Schaaf were also on the team. The FR/SO team was 6th. On that team was Camryn Davis, Alie Furhman, Addie Martin, Jakeob Stewart, Gwen Fry, Stevie Amos, Kristy Beene and Autumn Kimrey

I apologize for this situation but it is presently out of our Control. On a Higher Note we are glad to report that The JHL Young Man who was injured Friday seems to be on Track for a full recovery.

The flag that will be Flown Friday September 13 During the Uniontown Vs Jayhawk-Linn FB game is from the coffin of First Lieutenant Eugene Kohfield who was a United States Air Force helicopter pilot. September 13, 1951, while flying a search and rescue mission for a downed pilot, his aircraft was hit by enemy fire, the helicopter crashed and he and the crew were killed. As we listen to the National Anthem and face the flag, may we remember all who have given their lives for our freedom Including The 9/11 Extremely Brave First responders, Their Families , Their Communities & The Entire USA. This year WBE bought school supplies in bulk, and with the help of supporters we were able to provide families in need with those supplies at a reduced rate or no cost at all. The Fitness Center will reopen to the public on Monday, August 26. Monday - Friday the fitness center will open at 5:00 AM and close again at 7:00 AM. It will then reopen at 5:30 PM and be open until 9:00 PM.
REMINDER - Band Parent Meeting for 7th-12th grade students will be at 7:30 PM, Thursday, August 15 in the Band Room.
MEETING SITE CHANGED: Fall Sports Parent Meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday, August 15 at 6:30 PM. The meeting will be held in the HIGH SCHOOL COMMONS AREA. The parking lot at WBE was completed today and is not ready for traffic to drive on it.
Developmental screenings on Aug. 23rd at WBE for 3-5 year-old students who may be in need of special services. This is a free screening conducted by the Southeast Kansas Interlocal #637. Appointments are needed and can be made by contacting Jennifer Vaughn at 620-704-6549.
