Dear 7th Grade Parents,
The seventh graders will begin work on their Veteran’s project for a presentation on November 11th, at the Veteran’s Showcase here at Uniontown for Veteran’s Day. This project will include writing, speaking and listening skills for the students as they prepare their presentations. This project involves the students interviewing a veteran you or your family are acquainted with. If they do not know a veteran, I can arrange for an interview with veterans I know. I have given them a deadline of Monday, October 27th to complete their interview.
They also will need to get a tri-fold display board (36x48) to put their information on for the showcase. These boards may be purchased at various places including Walmart, Target, Hobby Lobby as well as Dollar General. I would like them to bring their display board to school by November 3rd. The background of the board needs to be complete when they bring it that day. It can be covered with paper, painted, or a combination of both. I want the background of their board to be completed at home. We will focus on the writing aspect at school, so no paragraphs need to be written at home. Additional graphics and decorations may be added to the board as well to enhance the finished product. It will take several class periods to put together all of the information on the display boards to get them ready for the Nov. 11th showcase.
During their interview, they need to request a copy of a picture of their veteran, preferably one of them in their uniform. A current photo or any photo their veteran would be willing to share would also enhance their display. Students will be using information from their interview to write paragraphs and a poem. We will be using class time to put our display boards together so it’s very important that the students get the interview completed on time and bring their display boards by the requested date. Students will be displaying these for many people to see, so they need to put time and effort into this to make a product they can be proud to show off, as well as honor their veteran.
This is a very exciting and positive educational experience for these students. Please plan to be here to support your child in this tribute to our veterans on Veteran's Day after our local veteran’s ceremony. Please invite the veteran to attend if possible as well so they can see the work the students have put into honoring them. I would like them to dress appropriately and feel proud of what they have done to honor these veterans. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me at school 620-224-2350, nbolton@uniontown235.org
